Gearbox Diagnostics & Repair
A gearbox fault left unattended almost always gets worse — and more expensive to fix. Whether your manual gearbox is crunching, your automatic is slipping, or you have noticed a leak underneath, early diagnosis saves money.
At Bedlington MOT and Service Centre, we diagnose gearbox faults using a combination of road testing, visual inspection, and electronic diagnostics for automatic transmissions. We explain what we find and provide a clear quote before carrying out any work.
Manual gearbox repair
Synchromesh rings, bearings, selector forks, and input/output shaft repair. We strip and rebuild manual gearboxes on-site.
Automatic gearbox diagnostics
Electronic fault code reading, solenoid testing, and fluid pressure checks to identify automatic transmission faults without unnecessary disassembly.
Gearbox oil and fluid changes
Regular fluid changes extend gearbox life. We drain, flush, and refill with the correct specification fluid for your vehicle.
Gearbox replacement
When repair is not economical, we source and fit quality replacement gearboxes — reconditioned or new — for all common makes and models.
Gearbox problems are often related to clutch wear, so we check both together. If clutch replacement is needed alongside gearbox work, doing both at the same time saves significant labour cost since the gearbox is already removed.
Common Gearbox Faults
These are the gearbox issues we see most frequently at our Bedlington workshop:
Difficulty selecting gears
Often caused by worn synchromesh rings, a damaged selector mechanism, or low gearbox oil. Most common on older manual vehicles with high mileage.
Gearbox noise
Whining in gear, rumbling in neutral, or knocking on overrun typically indicate worn bearings or damaged gear teeth.
Slipping out of gear
The gearbox pops out of a selected gear under load. Usually caused by worn detent springs, selector forks, or synchro hubs.
Oil leaks
Gearbox oil seeping from seals or gaskets. Low oil levels cause accelerated wear, so leaks should be fixed promptly.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, do not wait for the problem to worsen. Gearbox internals that run with low oil or damaged components cause cascading failures that increase the repair cost significantly.
