1.2 PureTech Wet Belt Replacement in Bedlington — from £579

The 1.2 PureTech Wet Belt, Explained

The PSA 1.0/1.2 PureTech is one of the most common small petrol engines on UK roads — it powered a decade of Peugeots, Citroëns, Vauxhalls and DS models, and it runs its timing belt inside the engine, immersed in oil. Award-winning when new, its wet belt has since become one of the best-known reliability stories in motoring.

The mechanism is the same as every belt-in-oil design, but the PureTech has felt it acutely: the oil degrades the belt's rubber, the belt sheds debris into the oil system, and that debris collects wherever oil is drawn — the pick-up strainer, the variable valve timing solenoids, and the vacuum pump that powers the brake servo. The results range from a low oil pressure warning to reduced braking assistance to a seized engine.

The tell-tale fault code

PureTech engines can log P15A8 — the code for belt material contaminating the oil circuit. If a diagnostic shows it, the belt needs attention now.

The filler-cap check

On many PureTechs the belt is visible through the oil filler: healthy looks smooth, black and shiny; failing looks rough and grey with visible cords. Call in and we will look.

Not just the engine at risk

Debris can block the vacuum pump’s oil way, reducing brake servo assistance — a safety issue, not just a mechanical one.

Manufacturer response

Stellantis cut the interval, extended warranty cover, ran a compensation scheme — and moved the current engine to a chain. The issue is real and acknowledged.

The good news: caught on schedule, this is a routine, well-understood job — and the PureTech is one of the more affordable wet belts to replace.

Which Cars Have the PureTech Wet Belt?

The belt-era engine appears across four brands (plus a Toyota van), built roughly 2013–2023:

Peugeot

108, 208, 2008, 308, 3008, 5008 — the 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech petrols.

Citroën & DS

C1, C3, C3 Aircross, C4, C4 Cactus, C5 Aircross, Berlingo; DS 3, DS 7.

Vauxhall

Corsa, Astra, Crossland, Grandland, Mokka — the 1.2 arrived with the Stellantis-era models from around 2019.

Toyota

The Proace City van shares the 1.2 PureTech.

The important nuance for newer cars: Stellantis moved the third-generation 1.2 to a timing chain from 2023 — but by engine generation, not registration date. The chain went mainly into the new hybrid versions, while non-hybrid 1.2s could still carry the wet belt engine on 2023–2025 registrations. A 1.2 Hybrid has a chain; a non-hybrid 1.2 needs its reg checked.

Not sure? That is exactly what the form below is for — send your reg and we confirm belt or chain, and the right price either way.

The Interval Was Cut — Then the Warranty Was Extended

The PureTech schedule has moved more than almost any engine on sale, and the story matters because it affects both what your car needs and what help you may be entitled to:

The interval, halved

Originally around 10 years / 112,500 miles; officially revised down to 6 years / roughly 60,000–64,000 miles. Real-world failures have been reported earlier still.

Extended warranty

Stellantis extended cover on previous-generation PureTech engines to up to 10 years / 112,000 miles for parts and labour, subject to service-history conditions.

Compensation scheme

An official portal reimbursed qualifying belt-related costs incurred 2022–2024, including for UK customers.

The fix in the current engine

The third-generation 1.2 switched to a timing chain from 2023 — Stellantis’ own answer to the belt question.

Our honest advice: if your belt has already failed or is failing, check your eligibility under the Stellantis scheme with a dealer first — scheme repairs go through the dealer network, and we would rather you used cover you are entitled to. If you are outside the scheme, or you want the belt replaced preventatively on schedule at an independent price, that is the work we do every week.

What Makes a PureTech Belt Fail Early?

Two identical cars can have very different belt life, because the belt's enemy is the condition of the oil it lives in. These are the accelerators — and why the official interval is a ceiling, not a guarantee:

Short journeys

School runs and town driving leave unburnt fuel in the oil, and diluted oil attacks the belt. The classic low-mileage PureTech is a higher-risk car than its odometer suggests.

Stretched oil-change intervals

Old, degraded oil is harder on the belt. A car that has missed or stretched services carries more belt risk at the same age.

The wrong oil

Any garage can put 5W-30 in — but if it isn’t the PSA-specification 5W-30, the belt pays for it over the following years.

Unknown history

Just bought a used PureTech with no belt invoice in the folder? Assume the belt has never been done and price it into the purchase.

None of these are reasons to avoid the car — they are reasons to know where your belt stands. Send us the reg and the mileage and we will tell you honestly whether it is due now, due soon, or fine to leave.

What Our PureTech Wet Belt Service Includes — From £579

A PureTech wet belt replacement is an engine-critical job with one detail that matters more than any other — the oil:

New wet belt kit

The correct belt and tensioners for your exact PureTech variant, timed and torqued to the manufacturer’s procedure.

Correct PSA-spec oil & new filter

The refill uses the correct PSA-specification 5W-30 — the specification code, not just the viscosity — because the wrong oil is one of the main reasons these belts fail early.

Debris inspection

With the system open we look for shed rubber where accessible — if your belt has been degrading, you should know about it, not have it quietly sealed back up.

Road test & warranty

Finished with a road test and covered by our 12-month / 10,000-mile workmanship warranty.

On price: national booking platforms report averages around £700–£725 for Peugeot and Citroën wet belt work, with specialist prices commonly £580–£900.
